Practicing Gratitude

Our gardens, relationships and pastimes all show us that when you focus on something, it grows. Cultivating a habit of appreciation sows the seeds of abundance across every field of your life! This "attitude of gratitude" is defined in the Raja Yoga tradition as "Aparigraha" a Sanskrit word for greedlessness or non-grasping.

To practice, simply take note and acknowledge where your life is plentiful. The tradition of Turkey Day and all the jubilant pigging out with family and friends is one way. But to practice this on purpose, everyday no matter what the day brings is when we truly deepen our relationship to the sweet fullness that is life. The challenges and difficulties are softened by our open hearts and appreciation for the basics.

A few of my favorite ways to remember to practice thankfulness is to say "Thanks!" in full awareness, every time I turn a key, or see a sunrise, or find change lying about. Making small habits that remind us of what we already have lends the grace to take only what is truly necessary.

When we commit to celebrating all the extras strewn through out our lives, giving thanks becomes honest and easy, because we find extra to share. In this way a grateful heart is forever satisfied and full, not stuffed, but just right.
